Updated on April 28, 2020The verb ir is one of the most frequently used verbs in Spanish. It is typically translated as to go. You might not expect fue and vaya to be conjugations of the same verb, but that is what happens with the verb ir. As would be expected for a verb that uniquely has an ending only —with no stem—, ir is highly irregular. Most unusually, it shares its preterite and imperfect subjunctive forms with ser. The context typically will indicate which verb is being conjugated. The verb ir is also frequently used to form the periphrastic future.
In the tables below you can find the conjugations of ir in the indicative mood (present, past, and future), the subjunctive mood (present and past), the imperative mood, and other verb forms.
Notice that the present tense conjugations are highly irregular, since none of the verbs resemble the infinitive ir.
Yo | voy | Yo voy al trabajo temprano. | I go to work early. |
Tú | vas | Tú vas a la playa durante el fin de semana. | You go to the beach over the weekend. |
Usted/él/ella | va | Ella va al cine con sus amigos. | She goes to the movies with her friends. |
Nosotros | vamos | Nosotros vamos al partido de fútbol. | We go to the soccer game. |
Vosotros | vais | Vosotros vais a la tienda frecuentemente. | You go to the store frequently. |
Ustedes/ellos/ellas | van | Ellos van a la biblioteca para estudiar. | They go to the library to study. |
Notice that in the preterite tense, the conjugations of ir are exactly the same as the preterite conjugations of the verb ser. Therefore, you need context to determine which verb is being used.
Yo | fui | Yo fui al trabajo temprano. | I went to work early. |
Tú | fuiste | Tú fuiste a la playa durante el fin de semana. | You went to the beach over the weekend. |
Usted/él/ella | fue | Ella fue al cine con sus amigos. | She went to the movies with her friends. |
Nosotros | fuimos | Nosotros fuimos al partido de fútbol. | We went to the soccer game. |
Vosotros | fuisteis | Vosotros fuisteis a la tienda frecuentemente. | You went to the store frequently. |
Ustedes/ellos/ellas | fueron | Ellos fueron a la biblioteca para estudiar. | They went to the library to study. |
The verb ir is also conjugated irregularly in the imperfect tense. The imperfect can be translated to English as "was going" or "used to go."
Yo | iba | Yo iba al trabajo temprano. | I used to go to work early. |
Tú | ibas | Tú ibas a la playa durante el fin de semana. | You used to go to the beach over the weekend. |
Usted/él/ella | iba | Ella iba al cine con sus amigos. | She used to go to the movies with her friends. |
Nosotros | íbamos | Nosotros íbamos al partido de fútbol. | We used to go to the soccer game. |
Vosotros | ibais | Vosotros ibais a la tienda frecuentemente. | You used to go to the store frequently. |
Ustedes/ellos/ellas | iban | Ellos iban a la biblioteca para estudiar. | They used to go to the library to study. |
The future tense is normally conjugated starting with the infinitive of the verb, and then adding the future tense endings. This is one of the few verb tenses for which ir is conjugated regularly.
Yo | iré | Yo iré al trabajo temprano. | I will go to work early. |
Tú | irás | Tú irás a la playa durante el fin de semana. | You will go to the beach over the weekend. |
Usted/él/ella | irá | Ella irá al cine con sus amigos. | She will go to the movies with her friends. |
Nosotros | iremos | Nosotros iremos al partido de fútbol. | We will go to the soccer game. |
Vosotros | iréis | Vosotros iréis a la tienda frecuentemente. | You will go to the store frequently. |
Ustedes/ellos/ellas | irán | Ellos irán a la biblioteca para estudiar. | They will go to the library to study. |
In the periphrastic future, the verb ir is used twice, since this verb tense is formed with the verb ir followed by the preposition a and then infinitive of the verb. This is similar to the English form "going to go."
Yo | voy a ir | Yo voy a ir al trabajo temprano. | I am going to go to work early. |
Tú | vas a ir | Tú vas a ir a la playa durante el fin de semana. | You are going to go to the beach over the weekend. |
Usted/él/ella | va a ir | Ella va a ir al cine con sus amigos. | She is going to go to the movies with her friends. |
Nosotros | vamos a ir | Nosotros vamos a ir al partido de fútbol. | We are going to go to the soccer game. |
Vosotros | vais a ir | Vosotros vais a ir a la tienda frecuentemente. | You are going to go to the store frequently. |
Ustedes/ellos/ellas | van a ir | Ellos van a ir a la biblioteca para estudiar. | They are going to go to the library to study. |
The gerund of -ir verbs is normally formed with the stem of the verb and the ending -iendo. Since ir doesn't really have a stem, the -ie in the ending changes to y and you end up with the form yendo. This verb form can be used in the present progressive and other progressive tenses.
Present Progressive of Ir | está yendo | Ella está yendo al cine con sus amigos. | She is going to the movies with her friends. |
The past participle for -ir verbs usually ends in -ido. For the verb ir, you end up simply using ido as the past participle. This verb form is used in the perfect tenses with the auxiliary verb haber.
Present Perfect of Ir | ha ido | Ella ha ido al cine con sus amigos. | She has been to the movies with her friends. |
In the conditional tense, ir is conjugated regularly. Just like in the future tense, you simply add the conditional endings to the infinitive ir.
Yo | iría | Yo iría al trabajo temprano si me levantara más temprano. | I would go to work early if I got up earlier. |
Tú | irías | Tú irías a la playa durante el fin de semana si pudieras. | You would go to the beach over the weekend if you could. |
Usted/él/ella | iría | Ella iría al cine con sus amigos, pero tiene que estudiar. | She would go to the movies with her friends, but she has to study. |
Nosotros | iríamos | Nosotros iríamos al partido de fútbol si tuviéramos boletos. | We would go to the soccer game if we had tickets. |
Vosotros | iríais | Vosotros iríais a la tienda frecuentemente si estuviera más cerca. | You would go to the store frequently if it were closer. |
Ustedes/ellos/ellas | irían | Ellos irían a la biblioteca para estudiar, pero prefieren quedarse en casa. | They would go to the library to study, but they prefer to stay home. |
The present subjunctive conjugations of ir are completely irregular.
Que yo | vaya | El jefe pide que yo vaya al trabajo temprano. | The boss asks that I go to work early. |
Que tú | vayas | Marta espera que tú vayas a la playa durante el fin de semana. | Marta hopes that you go to the beach over the weekend. |
Que usted/él/ella | vaya | Petra quiere que ella vaya al cine con sus amigos. | Petra wants her to go to the movies with her friends. |
Que nosotros | vayamos | El entrenador recomienda que nosotros vayamos al partido de fútbol. | The coach recommends that we go to the soccer game. |
Que vosotros | vayáis | Esteban sugiere que vosotros vayáis a la tienda frecuentemente. | Esteban suggests that you go to the store frequently. |
Que ustedes/ellos/ellas | vayan | El profesor espera que ellos vayan a la biblioteca para estudiar. | The professor hopes that they go to the library to study. |
In the imperfect subjunctive tense, ir also shares the same conjugation as the verb ser (just like in the preterite tense), so you need context in order to know which verb is being used. There are two ways in which you can conjugate the imperfect subjunctive:
Option 1
Que yo | fuera | El jefe pidió que yo fuera al trabajo temprano. | The boss asked that I go to work early. |
Que tú | fueras | Marta esperaba que tú fueras a la playa durante el fin de semana. | Marta hoped that you would go to the beach over the weekend. |

Option 2
Que yo | fuese | El jefe pidió que yo fuese al trabajo temprano. | The boss asked that I go to work early. |

Que ustedes/ellos/ellas | fuesen | El profesor esperaba que ellos fuesen a la biblioteca para estudiar. | The professor hoped that they go to the library to study. |
